Current Gallery: spiritsigns ( piece)
The Spirit Sign Series are an effort to make sure I am focused daily on why I make art. I knew it would be especially difficult because I have a serious allergy to repeating myself-not a good thing for an artist. Part of what makes people believe the claim of being an artist is if they can match this claim to the background knowledge that they can see the established artists repeat themselves in a body of work; then they can identify the work as being made by so and so artist. I have silently battled this concept throughout my entire existence. I don't like to repeat myself even in regular communication - that is, I don't like to repeatedly explain myself. That has made teaching especially easy. Hmph! So, with an aversion to duplication that borders on compulsive, why would I want to consciously attempt to do that in making art? Especially if the reason I make art is to learn more about that moment of realizing something new, the moment of insight.... But, oh well, we all have to grow up sometime. I have had to accept that some form of repetition is part of what in the end makes us masters of our own existence. At least, humanity as a whole has so many symbols of a religious or spiritual nature that I could make a different one each day for the rest of my life and still have not truly repeated myself.
